Kite-flying warm-ups Saturday and Sunday
01:00 AM EDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
NEWPORT –– Kite enthusiasts will prepare for the Newport Kite Festival (newportkitefestival.net) with informal warm-ups Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting, at Brenton Point State Park on Ocean Drive.
The kite festival is scheduled for July 11 and 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the park. It will include sport kites, kite making, fighter kites, Rokaku kite battles, and a ground display contest.
Flying will begin when the wind picks up.
Throughout the summer, some of the East Coast’s top kite flyers and designers gather at the park on weekends to fly and help beginners. Schedules change with the weather. The Web site, kitesinri.com, stays on top of local events.
