Columnist Mark Patinkin: For the star of my dog book, many characters to choose from
I try hard to celebrate the successes of others, but I’m miffed that a Philadelphia columnist is far richer than I am because he wrote about his dog before I wrote about mine. His name is John Grogan, and not only was his book Marley and Me a mega-best-seller – now there’s a movie based on the book starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.

Mark Patinkin: Where we rank in things that matter
Providence is the fourth most romantic city for baby boomers, has one of the top 10 Little Italys, and comes in ninth nationally in how often its people visit the dentist.

Patinkin: Time has passed Hillary Clinton by
In the cold days of early January, when Hillary Clinton’s war chest still overshadowed Barack Obama’s, I got an unexpected e-mail.

My spending strays from the national stats

Patinkin: Rawson’s rule was write, fly, write some more
I was working the late shift at The Providence Journal until 1:30 a.m. I had been with the paper two years, so this goes back a few decades. Don’t ask how many.

Miley pics bad enough, but what was Billy Ray thinking?
Up until this week, my main regard toward Miley Cyrus was to be grateful my daughter is no longer 11. If she were, there might have been pressure on me to get $400 tickets to a Hanna Montana concert.

Meet Christine, sadly lost at sea
She began by showing me pictures of her daughter. Christine Grinavic is a striking young woman, a tall outdoorsy blonde. She is a sailor, a writer, and, at age 27, quite a traveler, having visited 19 countries. She started college in the Midwest and finished at URI. Her half-serious dream is to open a coffee bar in the Caribbean. She has long loved iced coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts and thinks they need a place that serves something just as good in St. Thomas.

Mark Patinkin: Rev. Wright could be the reason why Obama is defeated
There are a lot of folks of all races who would like to see Barack Obama become president — but to be honest, some of those with the greatest historic interest are African-Americans.

‘Dear Idiot, we regret to inform you ...’
My first choice was Oberlin College, in Ohio. My whole world depended on getting accepted there.

Patinkin: ‘Hawaihya,’ Julianna Margulies
It has fallen a bit under the radar, but there’s yet another network series set in Rhode Island, and today I’m defending us against it, or at least a comment made by its lead actress.

Enough with objectivity — here are news items as I’d like to write them
People keep saying journalists sneak their own politics into the news.
