There’s still time to learn to sail

It’s not too late in summer, or life, to learn. Sail.

You’ve still got time. And we’ve still got wind and water. All you need is know-how, and perhaps a boat. Find it.

Look near the ocean: Providence, South Kingstown, Newport and Fall River. Where you find people sailing boats is where you’ll find people renting them, and people teaching others the art –– and pleasure –– of sailing them.

“We think it’s a crime for anyone to live in the Ocean State and not learn how to sail,” said John O’Flaherty, executive director of the Community Boating Center in Providence.

The sailing season for some places run through Labor Day weekend; others through the end of September. It’s not too late to liberate your mind from stress.

“There is a sense of freedom in sailing,” said Kim Hapgood, program director at Sail Newport. “You can’t help but put other issues in your mind aside. That is incredibly relaxing. People find it rejuvenating.”
