A bounty of boisterous fun for buccaneers

05/24/2007 01:00 AM EDT

This year’s Pirate Fest comes to Newport Saturday. Mad Mary was the guide for the opening tours on Cap’n Nick’s Newport Pirate Walk — part of the festival — in 2005.

Arrrr! There’s a Pirate Fest in Newport on Saturday. Youngsters can plunder plenty of fun beginning at 10 a.m. in the Brick Market Place off America’s Cup Avenue.

There’s a treasure hunt, a thieves market, a pirate trial re-enactment, a costume party and storytelling. There are crafts and stories at the library, 300 Spring St. And it’s all free. There are also Newport pirate walks offered at the Gateway Visitors Center, $15, $10 for children.

The event, presented by Austen Sharp Productions, coincides with the national release of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which will be shown throughout the day at Island Cinemas 10 on Route 114 in Middletown.

For adults, there’s a 5:30 and 7 p.m. cocktail cruise on the Rum Runner II from Bannisters Wharf, $25. Reservations are recommended: (401) 847-0298. And, finally, there’s the Buccaneer’s Ball at 8 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Center. Costumes are encouraged. Admission is $25 in advance and $35 at the door. For reservations, more information and a complete listing of events, visit www.piratefest.net.
