Help crime victims; plant eelgrass; chip in for Autism Project

Day One-Sexual Assault and Trauma Resource Center in Providence seeks adults 18 and over from across Rhode Island to become advocates for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and hate crimes. Advocates will have the opportunity to work with victims at hospitals and police stations throughout the state offering crisis intervention, support, safety planning and referrals. There is a strong need for bilingual advocates to interact with the diverse population. Training is required. The next 30-hour training begins Sept. 3. Providence Emergency Management Agency seeks dedicated teens and adults to train in disaster relief. In the event of a citywide disaster or crisis, Providence would need over 400 trained volunteers to operate emergency shelters. PEMA needs community members to ensure that Providence is prepared to respond to and recover from a crisis. Individuals with all skills, training areas and education levels are needed. A 21-hour training course that includes CPR and First Aid, introduction to disaster services, mass care, shelter operations and a live simulation is required. Save The Bay in Providence seeks adventurous individuals for their Fall Eelgrass Restoration Projects. Certified scuba divers 18 and older, experienced kayakers and sorting volunteers are needed to assist with this exciting, outdoor volunteer opportunity on the Bay. The Autism Project of Rhode Island in Providence seeks teens, families and individuals help collect chips at the end of the CVS Caremark Downtown 3K and 5K runs on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Participants are needed to stand inside the finish line and collect computer chips on runners’ sneakers. The race takes place in front of the Providence Place mall with individuals from across Rhode Island taking part in the event.
