Tutoring adults in reading and math; Planning a wish come true

Dorcas Place Adult & Family Learning Center in Providence has many opportunities for volunteers. Tutors are needed to work with adult students in math, reading, writing and GED preparation at Dorcas Place under the supervision of a teacher on weekdays and weeknights. Help is also needed from ESL/Basic Literacy Classroom Aides, who assist teachers and work with students. The agency is looking for volunteers to help with the annual Spell Rhode Island Challenge and other events throughout the year, both in the planning process and the day of events. Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties needs volunteers from August to January to help host more than 80 flu clinics throughout the two counties. Volunteers will provide clerical support for all the paperwork involved. Interested volunteers must have good organizational skills, an attention to detail, knowledge of working a copy machine and awareness of patient confidentiality. A Wish Come True in Warwick is looking for event planners. Volunteers with the skill and time to help plan and implement fundraising events are needed, along with people to help with ongoing events that are already planned. Training will be provided. Meals on Wheels needs volunteers to set up and serve lunchtime meals at dining sites throughout Providence. These volunteers will have the opportunity to get involved with special events at these sites as well as make the meal a pleasant time for seniors who come to dine. Volunteers are also needed to manage these dining sites two days a week from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Basic math and organizational skills are required for the daily paperwork. Experience in food handling and safety is helpful. Bilingual candidates are a plus. On-the-job training provided for all positions. Home & Hospice Care in Pawtucket needs volunteers right now in several different capacities. People are invited to join the hospice patient volunteer team, which provides practical and emotional support to patients and families through visits, respite care and companionship at patients’ homes, nursing homes or the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Unit. Those bilingual in Portuguese or Spanish are especially encouraged to apply. The agency is looking for other volunteers to provide office support doing filing, copying, mailings and telephone reception. Volunteers from anywhere in the state who can knit, crochet or quilt are needed to make 30 inch by 60 inch shawls or lap robes from soft yarn. These can be mailed to the hospice or picked up.
