Shopping: Queen of Hearts art store celebrates 2 years
10/05/2008 01:00 AM EDT
Queen of Hearts, a downcity Providence store filled with the works of various local artists, is celebrating its second anniversary. Owner and fashion designer Karen Beebe will hold a special event Saturday, staying open until 11 p.m. The store now represents more than 40 artists. Among the latest are Alex Aponte, who designs fine jewelry and will do custom pieces; Jennifer Nicole, whose fashions are an extremely soft 80 percent cotton and 20 percent silk; and Adrian Diorio, whose BRYCE line of skin products such as coconut exfoliating facial scrub is organic and all natural. Queen of Hearts, 186 Union St., is just around the corner from Westminster’s Tazza Caffé. Call (401) 421-1471.
Circa, a funky vintage clothing store that has been a fixture in Fairhaven, Mass., then for a while on Coggeshall Street in New Bedford, has moved into an expansive new space with a promising partner: the New England Demolition and Salvage Co. Movie people have long been coming to both stores for period furniture and clothes (Hilary Duff’s Girl Scout vest in the upcoming film Greta is from Circa; a Marlboro-man type jacket from Circa was worn by Will Ferrell in the recent SemiPro); now they — and we — can have one-stop shopping at 73 Cove St. (call 508-997-9390 or visit myspace.com/circavintagewear). Owned by Chris Duval, the store stocked with men’s fedoras, Hairspray-style clothes and ’60s minis offers clothing both for sale and for rent. Halloween’s coming!
Self-improvement workshops and classes have become part of the offerings at the very pretty Ferns and Flowers Teahouse and Bistro in Warwick. In addition to its regular menu and some German specials for Ocktoberfest, the bistro is offering classes in October and November on prosperity (four-week course), miracles, the art of breathwork and “The Dream Circle.” Check them out at www.fernsandflowers.com or call Monica at (401) 821-1447.
This column rounds up local news involving stores, services and products. Send items three weeks in advance to What’s In Store, Sunday Lifebeat, 75 Fountain St., Providence, RI 02902.
