Westerly fair; second no-frills grocery market
05/18/2008 01:00 AM EDT
About 25 to 30 vendors from Rhode Island and Connecticut will sell annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, vegetables (some organically grown), herbs, and garden accessories at the Wilcox Park Garden Market Fair today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Westerly.
Look for a large selection of hanging plant arrangements and unusual plants at reasonable prices. Wilcox Park volunteers will be selling plants from the park’s collections at the historic bandstand. A large selection of the park’s daylily cultivars will be available this year.
Local artisans will also be selling jewelry, pottery, and candy. In the Children’s Corner, kids can make miniature gardens, and the town band will give a concert outdoors behind the library at noon. The Chester House will providing food on the Esplanade (across from Town Hall). Their menu consists of grilled burgers, chicken, shrimp and clam chowder.
Next weekend Wilcox Park in Westerly is the site of the annual Virtu Arts Festival with artists from around the country exhibiting their wares in the midst of live entertainment, food, and children’s activities. It’s 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and next Sunday. Call (401) 596 - 7761.
The second Rhode Island Aldi grocery store, a Germany-based no-frills chain, is open at 1138 Pontiac Ave. in Cranston. Aldi opened its first Rhode Island store in March at 444 Quaker Lane in Warwick. Aldi is smaller than a typical supermarket and carries about 1,300 products, many of them private label. Aldi’s claim to fame is lower prices through its no-frills philosophy. (Bring your own bags, along with a quarter to free up a shopping cart, European-style.)
Bargains are afoot Memorial Day weekend at Wrentham Village Premium Outlets in Wrentham, Mass. Among them: a Restoration Hardware Tent Sale, with an additional 15 percent off all furniture Thursday through next Monday. See www.premiumoutlets.com/ wrentham.
