The Polar Joy rose can be left in the ground during the winter.

GARDEN

Tree rose ready for our winters

Bailey Nurseries has developed a tree rose that can stand up to Northern winters.

The First Editions Polar Joy rose is hardy in Zones 4 to 7, which includes Southeastern New England. It’s grown on its own root, so it can be left in the ground in winter.

The plant has soft pink blossoms throughout the summer atop a 3- to 6-foot stem, adding vertical interest to a garden.

Polar Joy is available at some garden centers and can be ordered in bare-root form for $39.95 plus shipping from Nature Hills Nursery at www.naturehills.com or (402) 934-8116.

Best to replant uprooted bulbs now

Q. I dug up some crocus bulbs during a landscaping project. Should I replant them now or store them to replant in the fall? Some have greenery attached.

A. The best place for the bulbs is back in the ground, the U.S. Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center says. Leave the green foliage intact when you replant so the bulbs can continue to store energy for next spring.
