Pirates in Newport
Walk the plank to Newport. You’ll find the third annual PirateFest, most of which takes place off America’s Cup Avenue. It all begins at 10 a.m. today with a treasure hunt in Market Square, which costs $2 per map. There are also pirate-themed cruises and fashion shows. The fest ends with a Buccaneers Ball at 8 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Center, which cost $35. For more information, visit www.piratefest.net.
Time to tango
Dance. If you don’t have a partner, you’ll find one at the Alternative Tango Festival, which began yesterday and runs through Monday at Providence Tango, 99 South Bend St., Pawtucket. Hundreds of people are expected to participate in a variety of workshops and dances. You can join in for a small workshop, $10, or for the entire festival, $320. For registration, more information and complete festival schedule, visit www.providencetango.com or call (401) 728-9393.
New ballet
Change may be in the air, but it’s also on the floor in Newport. Island Moving Company, a contemporary ballet troupe, presents a couple of new dances in its new show, Metamorphosis. The show is at 8 p.m. in the Great Friends Meeting House at the corner of Farewell and Marlborough streets. Admission is $23.
