Newport Secret Garden Tour

06/20/2009 01:00 AM EDT

Pssst. Come closer. There’s a weekend garden tour in Newport. Pass it on.

The Secret Garden Tour is back, for the 26th consecutive year. This year’s event, which began Friday and runs through Sunday, features 13 gardens, six of which are new to the tour. It takes place in the historic and quaint Point Section of the city, a seaside community with Colonial, Federal and Victorian style houses built in the 1700s and 1800s. The tour, which typically draws about 1,200 people, goes on rain or shine.

“Usually the gardener is home,” says Myra Duvally, the tour’s founder and director. “Nothing will keep them from the public and their gardens on this weekend. They love to talk to people and explain this and that, what kind of mulch they use or what kind of fertilizer.”

The tour is Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A ticket, good for both days, is $25 and can be purchased at 33 Washington St., Newport, where you’ll also pick up your tour map. Proceeds go to the Benefactors of the Arts organization, which supports cultural programs in Aquidneck Island’s public schools. Parking is available at the Newport Visitors Center, 23 America’s Cup Ave. For more information, visit secretgardentours.org or call (401) 847-0514.
