Two descendants of Providence-born song-and-dance man George M. Cohan are celebrating the Fourth of July weekend today by taking in Theatre by the Sea’s production of George M, which follows the life of the famed Broadway entertainer.

California residents Maureen Costigan Santos and Delores Costigan Pollock, second cousins, are in town to attend activities marking the birth of Cohan 130 years ago. The Rhode Island Historical Society is holding a walking tour of the Fox Point neighborhood where Cohan was born on July 3, 1878.

George M, which debuted on Broadway in 1968, contains several patriot numbers written by Cohan, including “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “Over There” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” David Black, the original Broadway producer of George M, came to see the show last Saturday and then returned to the theater in Matunuck Thursday to talk with cast members.

A few alumni of Saturday Night Live will perform locally in August. Chevy Chase will host the JVC Jazz Festival Newport on Aug. 9 and 10. This is the second consecutive year that Chase, who’s also known for his roles in the movies Caddyshack and National Lampoon’s Vacation, has hosted the show. And Dan Aykroyd will appear at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods on Aug. 2 for a 9 p.m. show of The Blues Brothers, joined by Jim Belushi, brother of the late John Belushi, who was an original Blues Brother with Aykroyd. Tickets are $40 to $60. Visit www.mgmatfoxwoods.com or call (401) 331-2211.
