People: Nov. 30: Imus back on air in Providence
11/30/2007 03:23 PM EST
IMUS
Radio host Don Imus will return to the Rhode Island airwaves starting Monday.
Imus was signed to return to WABC in New York, a Citadel Broadcasting station, earlier this month, and he will broadcast from WSKO 790 AM, also a member of the Citadel chain, weekdays from 6 to 10 a.m.
The AM station had been simulcasting the Opie and Anthony morning show from 6 to 9 a.m. and the Andy Gresh-Scott Zolak sports-talk show from 9 a.m. to noon. Those will still be aired on WSKO’s FM station, at 99.7 FM, according to WSKO program director Ron St. Pierre; AM listeners will miss the first hour of Gresh and Zolak.
Imus left the air in April after a racial slur against a women’s college basketball team. St. Pierre, who will be the local host of the Imus show, said the ensuing controversy didn’t discourage the station.
“I think everybody’s aware of the incident, and it was unfortunate, and he’s already apologized up one side of the street and down the other,” said St. Pierre, noting that no FCC violation was committed. “Everybody has an opinion on that incident — it was national news. . . .
“He’s a proven ratings and revenue winner in the Providence market, and to have the opportunity to bring him back — we were delighted.”
Among Imus’ competitors will be John DePetro, at 630 WPRO-AM, who replaced St. Pierre at the station. Told that that could be interesting, St. Pierre replied, “Oh, yes it could.”
John Ghiorse, a TV meteorologist on NBC Channel 10, was inducted into the Gold and Silver Circle of the New England chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences last night in Boston. The Gold Circle recognizes those with at least 50 years of service in television; the Silver Circle recognizes those with at least 25 years.
Ghiorse, who has 41 years of weather-forecasting experience, was among five other people honored in the Silver Circle: Jack Hynes, Henry Becton, Dr. Mel Goldstein, Peter Mehegan and Liz Walker. Jack Hines, with 53 years of television experience, most recently as an anchor on The Ten O’Clock News on WLVI in Boston, was the sole honoree in the Gold Circle.
