Tie one on with a ’Gansett 12-pack
06/15/2009 01:00 AM EDT
Father’s Day approaches. You know you’ve got to get a gift, most likely a tie. But, gee, you’re thirsty. You don’t have that much money. And you could really go for a beer or two, or 12.
Well, fret not. Get the 12-pack and the tie. Your friends at Narragansett Beer are happy to help. The brewery, originally established in Rhode Island in 1890, is presenting its fifth annual Father’s Day promotion. Buy a 12-pack of beer; get a free tie.
You’ve got three choices: gold, blue and red – all subtly adorned or covered with the company’s advertising.
“It’s almost like an inside joke,” said Mark Hellendrung, Narragansett’s CEO. “Yes, you go to work wearing a tie, but you’re wearing a beer tie.”
Each year for the last four years, Hellendrung reports, more than 10,000 people have gotten in on the joke, namely the free Narragansett ties. The first 100 people on Facebook to feature photos of themselves wearing the ties get 100 T-shirts from the company. And anyone who Hellendrung spots wearing a Narragansett Beer tie during his travels around New England visiting liquor stores gets a case of beer.
As far as promotions are concerned, he said, “We try to tie it all together.”
