Author/illustrator Lynn Anderson found inspiration for her children’s book, The Flying Horses of Watch Hill, in the Rhode Island treasure.
East Providence
Crescent Park Looff Carousel, 700 Bullocks Point Ave.
Built in 1895 by Charles Looff, it has 61 horses, four chariots and one camel. It’s open Thursday through Sunday, noon to 8 p.m. Rides are $1, except on Thursdays, when they’re 75 cents.
Newport
The Easton Beach Carousel is on Memorial Boulevard and is open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The carousel was made by Herschell and was bought new in 1952. It has 60 aluminum horses and two stage coaches. Rides are $1. On weekdays, there’s free parking for 90 minutes at the beach for those visiting the carousel. On weekends, carousel parking for 90 minutes is $2.
Pawtucket
The Slater Park Looff Carousel was built in 1895. It features 42 horses, two chariots, three dogs, one lion, one camel and one giraffe. Riders go around, but not up and down. The carousel is currently closed for repainting. It’s expected to reopen on Labor Day and remain open on weekends through October, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Rides are 25 cents.
Providence
Carousel Village in Roger Williams Park, 1000 Elmwood Ave., was built in 1989 by the Chance Rides Company in Wichita, Kan. It has 55 horses, five other animals and two chariots. It’s open year-round. Its current hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Rides are $1.
Warwick
The carousel at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Rd., was built in 1992 by Chase Industries. It features 16 horses, one dragon and one rabbit. It operates Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rides are $1.
Westerly
Atlantic Beach Park, 321 Atlantic Ave., has a 1915 Herschell-Spillman carousel with 45 horses. It’s open daily, 2 to 10 p.m. Rides are $2.
The Flying Horse Carousel is at 151 Bay St., Watch Hill. It was built in 1883 by the Charles W.F. Dare Co. It features 20 horses that hang from poles and swing out when the carousel turns. It’s open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Rides are $1.50 on a horse on the outside edge of the carousel, $1 for an inside horse.
