Flowers, experts will be abloom in Newport this weekend

Hitomi Gilliam, an internationally acclaimed floral designer and author, and David Howard, former gardener for Prince Charles at Highgrove, will be the featured speakers during the Newport Flower Show this weekend. The event is scheduled to open Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Rosecliff, and will run through Sunday with a full schedule of speakers.
There will be an opening night party with a buffet, cocktails and music Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets to the opening night soiree cost $125 for members of The Preservation Society of Newport County or $150 for non-members.
Hitomi Gilliam is scheduled to appear Friday at a luncheon at 11:45 a.m. and at a lecture at 1 p.m. A ticket for the lunch and lecture costs $75 and includes admittance to the flower show. A ticket for the lecture and admittance to the show costs $40. A book signing will follow the lecture.
David Howard is set to appear at a luncheon Saturday at 11:15 a.m. and a lecture at 12:15 p.m. As Prince Charles’s head gardener he practiced organic methods at Highgrove. A ticket for the lunch and lecture costs $75 and includes admittance to the flower show. A ticket for the lecture and admittance to the show costs $40.
During all three days of the show, local and regional horticultural experts will present free seminars on a variety of subjects. They will include butterfly gardens, sustainable rose gardens, drought tolerance, and more.
Chris Fletcher, an arborist for Bartlett Tree Experts and a student of the folklore of trees, is scheduled to lead a walk on the grounds of Rosecliff Saturday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. He plans to talk about the greening of urban America.
The Newport Flower Show is Fri. 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sat. and Sun. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets for Fri. and Sat. are $20. Sun., two visitors will be admitted for $24.
