•Pruning Basics for Woody Ornamentals, Dana Greenhouses, 1050 Centre St., Jamaica Plain. Jen Kettell, a horticultural technician at Arnold Arboretum, demonstrates pruning tools and methods for maintaining well-balanced specimens and teaches the basic techniques of structural pruning to enhance beauty of ornamental shrubs. Biologist Marilyn Massaro introduces participants to the intricate relationships between plants and animals and how they relate to the aquatic environment.

Participants introduced to the basics of creating and tending an urban organic garden. Topics include garden planting, seed starting, lead testing, composting and soil health, working with children in the garden and more. Wed 6-7:30 pm. University of Rhode Island’s Master Composter and Recycler Training Program, Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, Elmwood Avenue, Providence. 874-2900 or e-mail ceed@etal.uri.edu. Five-week program geared toward local residents, municipal public works staff, conservation commissioners and others who are interested in becoming experts at composting and recycling. Weekly, two-hour sessions begin Mon, April 9, at 6 pm, and include such topics as the importance and benefits of composting and recycling, starting a backyard compost process, compost science, worm and innovative composting methods and community outreach. Two additional sessions scheduled to visit the state landfill in Johnston and Earth Care Farm, a commercial composting facility in Charlestown. Class also will tour the Southside Community Land Trust’s City Farm. $50.
