YESTERDAY’S TOP GAME

•Courtney St. Germain knocked in the winning run with a suicide squeeze in the 11th inning as Lincoln pulled out a 2-1 victory over La Salle in a Division I winners bracket fast-pitch softball playoff game yesterday. It was a classic pitchers’ duel between the Lions’ Brittany St. Martin and the Rams’ Jordan Kingley. St. Martin had a no-hitter through eight innings, and finished with a two-hitter. She struck out nine and walked three. Kingley, meanwhile, scattered seven hits while striking out six. She did not yield a walk. The winning run scored when, with Julie Paradis at second base, Diana Ricci laid down a sacrifice and Germain followed with her squeeze. Lincoln threatened in the bottom of the inning but a double play ended the game in dramatic fashion. The Lions’ runner at second tried to score on Mary Holt’s single. Right fielder Danielle Cartier hit the cutoff man, Kristen Lasorsa, who fired a strike to catcher Ashley Daniels to get the lead runner. She then threw to Paradis at second base to nail Holt trying to leg out a double. Lincoln next plays the winner of last night’s Toll Gate-Westerly game tomorrow at RIC at 6 p.m.

BEST OF THE REST

•Jackson Geary improved his record to 9-0 by pitching his ninth complete game of the season, leading South Kingstown to a 4-3 victory over Narragansett in a Region IV baseball playoff game. Geary struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. The Rebels overcame a 2-1 deficit by scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Ryan Stone doubled and Tim Jackson singled him in. The other runs scored on errors. Mike Connery (double) and Nate Gomes (single), plus an error, accounted for the Mariners’ runs. South Kingstown will play at Lincoln on Thursday.

•Jamie Hallam pitched a no-hitter and the Barrington fast-pitch softball team scored 10 runs in the sixth inning for a 10-0 victory over West Warwick in the Division II playoffs. Jill Lewis led off the inning with a triple to spark the rally. Lewis tripled again later in the inning. Valerie Luks delivered the big hit with a bases-clearing triple. Hallam finished with seven strikeouts. The Eagles, seeded first in the South, will face Smithfield, the No. 1 team from the North. That game will be played at 4 p.m. tomorrow at RIC. The Wizards will play Rogers today at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game at Newport.

YESTERDAY’S STARS

•Chris Pickering pitched a one-hitter through five innings while striking out seven and smacked a three-run homer to lead the Lions to a 10-1 win over Cranston East in the Division I-Region III baseball playoffs. In 55 innings this season, Pickering has given up just one earned run. He is 8-0 with one save.
