Undefeated Eagles fend off the Huskies
PROVIDENCE – Still grieving the loss of teammate Kayleigh Raposa, who died in a car accident on Feb. 23, the Mt. Hope girls basketball team put forth a valiant effort against Barrington in the last quarterfinal matchup of the Division II Tournament yesterday at Rhode Island College. But the undefeated II-East champion Eagles withstood the Huskies’ challenge, riding a 24-point performance by senior forward Jill Lewis to a hard-fought, 38-31 victory before a raucous crowd of more than 1,000 in the Murray Center.

La Salle, Bay View win, advance to semifinals
PROVIDENCE – La Salle and Bay View earned the top two seeds in the Girls Division I tournament of the 2007 Credit Union Basketball Championships, and yesterday they lived up to their top billing, capturing quarterfinal victories at Rhode Island College.

Harrington paces Scarlet Knights over Skippers
Lauren Harrington scored all of her team-high 13 points after halftime, including five in the final two minutes of overtime, leading the Exeter/West Greenwich girls basketball team to a 39-36 victory over North Kingstown in the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs. With the Scarlet Knights trailing, 35-34, Harrington sank a layup and followed with a 3-pointer to make it 39-35 with less than a minute left. Teammates Shelly Monahan and Katie Doyle had nine points apiece. Mary McCrossan and Melanie Zile each had 13 points for the Skippers. EWG advances to the semis and will face the winner of the Bay View-St. Raphael quarterfinal Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Rhode Island College.
