YESTERDAY’S TOP GAME

A single in the bottom of the ninth inning by Jimmy Brewer scored Paul Judice to give the Middletown baseball team a 3-2 victory over Woonsocket in an elimination game of the Division I Region 2 playoffs. Judice walked and then stole second and third to get into position for the winning run.

The Villa Novans scored once in the third and again in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. Woonsocket pitcher Justin Rainville cruised through the first five innings, holding Middletown scoreless while striking out seven. However, in the sixth, Rainville hit two batters and gave up a single to load the bases. Judice capitalized with a single that scored two runs.

Middletown starter Dean Spaulding went six innings and gave up three hits and two unearned runs. Reliever Matt Williams came on in the seventh and held Woonsocket to two hits the rest of the way to pick up the win.

BEST OF THE REST

•Liz Kacz pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead the Moses Brown fast-pitch softball team to a 2-0 victory over Johnston in an elimination game of the Division II playoffs. The Quakers scored both of their runs on back-to-back singles from Christina Rodriguez and Katie Sullivan in the first inning. Sherri Tallo pitched well for the Panthers, giving up six hits. Moses Brown will face West Warwick at 3:45 p.m. today at RIC.

•The Warwick Vets baseball team came back from a four-run deficit, tying it in the fifth inning before Josh Clift’s RBI single in the sixth scored what proved to be the game-winner in a 7-6 win over Cumberland in the Division I losers’ bracket. Clift was 3-for-3 with two RBI. The Hurricanes’ starting battery of Brad Collins and Ryan Fedo each had two hits.

Collins was relieved in the fifth inning by James Rodriguez, who pitched three shutout innings for the win. Dave Bouley was the standout for Cumberland with two hits and two RBI.

YESTERDAY’S STARS

•Zack Boyes hit a home run in the top of the seventh for the winning run as West Warwick beat Cranston East, 11-10, in the Division I playoffs. David Krasnouwiecki hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for the Bolt.

•East Greenwich advanced in the losers’ bracket of the Division I baseball playoffs as Sam Podbelski allowed only three hits over six innings and struck out four before Kyle Wilson nailed down a 7-1 win over Coventry.

Brendan Murray was 3-for-4 and scored two runs while Matt Streich had a two-run single in the sixth inning for the Avengers. Kevin Woodcock had two hits for Coventry.

•Fallon Scorpio was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Kristen Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI as Bay View stayed alive in the losers’ bracket of the Division I fast-pitch playoffs with an 11-3 win over Toll Gate. Pitcher Marian Long had six strikeouts in a complete-game performance for the Bengals.

•Anthony Dupre’s double in the seventh inning drove in Mark Melchiori as Pilgrim defeated Narragansett, 6-5, in the Division I baseball playoffs.
