Yesterday’s Top Game

Kevin Medeiros pitched six scoreless innings in relief and La Salle scored five runs in the 12th as the Rams defeated Woonsocket, 8-3, in the Division I baseball playoffs. Tom Darnowski and Kevin Dawber each had an RBI single in the 12th and Rob Maggiacomo provided the big blow, a three-run double. Medeiros entered in the seventh inning and got the win, scattering four hits while striking out five.

Best of the Rest

•Top-seeded Bay View avoided elimination from the Division I softball playoffs as the Bengals defeated Cumberland, 5-4, on Emily Burbridge’s walk-off solo homer. Bay View squandered a 4-0 lead as Cumberland tied it in the top of the seventh on Rachel Baxter’s RBI single. Burbridge was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.

•East Providence turned three Warwick errors in the seventh inning into three runs as the Townies advanced in the Division I softball losers’ bracket with a 4-3 victory. Warwick took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on Steph Morse’s three-run homer. East Providence tied it in the top of the seventh when Beth Barron reached on what turned out to be a two-run error. EP then got the winning run on Warwick’s fourth error of the day, the third of the inning.

•North Providence’s Derek Nesbitt survived a rocky first inning, giving up two runs, to post a complete-game 7-3 Division I baseball playoff win over Coventry. After the first inning he allowed only one other hit, and ended the game with three strikeouts. The Cougars broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs, two of them on a double by catcher Anthony Cambio. Matt Nassi was 2-2, scored and drove in a run while Keith McCluskie was 2-for-3 and scored two runs for North Providence.

•Rogers scored a run in the seventh to force extra innings, then got two in the ninth as the Vikings defeated East Greenwich, 8-7, in a Division II losers’ bracket softball game. East Greenwich overcame a 5-0 deficit with six runs in the top of the seventh. Hillary Noble, Lauren Pallister and Alexandra Gallogly each had RBI hits while Tanya Jones added a two-run double. Rogers tied it at 6-6 on an East Greenwich error, then overcame a 7-6 deficit in the ninth on an RBI double by Donna Duggan and the game-winning RBI single from Annie Galvin.

Yesterday’s Stars

•Rob Walsh netted five goals while Colin Briggs added two goals and three assists as Hendricken advanced to the Division I boys lacrosse championship game with a 13-5 victory over La Salle.

•Chris Eggeling had six goals and three assists and J.J. Gilbane finished with three goals and two assists as PCD eliminated defending state champion North Kingstown with a 13-11 victory in the Division I boys lacrosse semifinals. PCD plays unbeaten Hendricken in the championship game on Sunday.
