09:56 AM EDT on Tuesday, March 13, 2007
Corey Lescault may have been fatigued when he skated off the Portsmouth Abbey ice last night but teammate Ben Morrissette made all his hard work pay off.
Morrissette scored the game-winning goal with 2:49 to play and Lescault was sensational in net, making a season-high 52 saves, as Mt. Hope defeated North Providence, 2-1, in the deciding game of the Division III quarterfinal best-of-three series.
Mt. Hope, the third seed, advances to the semifinals, where the Huskies will play second-seeded North Kingstown. Game One is Friday night at URI at a time to be determined.
North Providence took a 1-0 lead at 10:11 of the second period on a power-play goal by Steve Borino. Rob Emma and Derek Castellone assisted on the goal.
Mt. Hope tied it at 5:37 when Ryan Doherty skated an unassisted, breakaway goal. Doherty’s shot from point-blank range was stopped by Cougar goalie Chris Sgambato but Doherty tapped in the rebound. Morrissette tallied the game-winner at 12:11, his third goal of the series.
In the other Division III quarterfinal series last night, Narragansett advanced with a 4-1 victory over Woonsocket. Narragansett, the fourth-seed, will play top-seed St. Raphael in the semifinals.
