Athletes net $5,000 scholarships

07:30 AM EDT on Friday, July 13, 2007

Burrillville’s Ryan Coffey, Barrington’s Julie Ruggieri and Woonsocket’s Andrew Marsella each will receive $5,000 scholarships as recipients of The Providence Journal Honor Roll Boy, Honor Roll Girl and Dick Reynolds Correspondent awards, respectively.

The Honor Roll Boy and Girl scholarships are awarded by Wendy’s and the Peter Bennett Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Fund. The Reynolds Correspondent scholarship is awarded through a fund named in honor of Dick Reynolds, the late Providence Journal sports writer, through the estate of his late sister, Catherine Reynolds.

The Wendy’s-Peter Bennett Scholarship is given in memory of the late Peter Bennett, who died in 1973 at the age of 11. The Bennett family, led by Harvey Bennett, one of Peter’s older brothers and an owner of several Wendy’s restaurants in Rhode Island and Vermont, established the scholarship in partnership with The Journal in 2005.

The Bennett family association with the Honor Roll program dates back to the mid-1960s when Curt Bennett, the oldest of six Bennett brothers and an All-State hockey and tennis player at Cranston East, was named the 1966 Journal Honor Roll Boy.

In addition to its involvement with the Honor Roll scholarships, Wendy’s will provide each Honor Roll nominee with a $20gift certificate. Once again this year, Cardi’s Furniture will award each of the scholarship recipients a $500 gift certificate.

The Honor Roll Boy and Girl are selected by a six-person committee composed of John Gillooly, Providence Journal sports writer; Anne (Sullivan) Hird, the 1977 Honor Roll Girl; Richard Santaniello, the 1952 Honor Roll Boy; Thomas Mezzanotte, executive director of the R.I. Interscholastic League; Elizabeth Marquis, assistant chairperson of the Interscholastic League’s Principals Committee on Athletics, and Richard Magarian, assistant executive director of the RIIL.

The Dick Reynolds Correspondent Award winner is selected by members of The Providence Journal sports department.
