It was a simple observation, but it told everything you need to know about why the Mt. Hope boys track team is the recipient of one of the Providence Journal/R.I. Interscholastic League Injury Fund Dick Reynolds team sportsmanship award this spring.
“They’re always having a good time and they are friendly to all. It’s nice to see,” one veteran coach wrote about the Huskies on her nomination form for the award.
The awards, named in honor of late Journal sportswriter Dick Reynolds, are presented to a boys and girls team in each of the three high school sports seasons – fall, winter and spring.
The recipient of this spring’s girls award is the Cranston East girls lacrosse team.
“The Cranston East coaches display exemplary sportsmanship that trickles down to the girls on the team,” wrote an official. “They compliment opposing players and coaches on a continual basis regardless of the score or outcome of the game. These girls are truly learning the positives of competition and are gaining invaluable life lessons.”
The other teams nominated for the boys award this spring were the Barrington and Ponaganset track teams, the West Warwick and Chariho volleyball teams and the Exeter West-Greenwich tennis team. The Prout, Mt. Hope, Cranston East and Cranston West softball teams also were nominated for the girls award along with the Ponaganset track team and the Narragansett lacrosse team.
