YESTERDAY'S TOP GAME
Barrington gained some breathing room in the Division I field hockey standings as the unbeaten Eagles (10-0) defeated second-place North Kingstown (8-3), 2-0. The Eagles extended their lead from two to four points. Barrington got both goals in the first half, from Julie Ruggieri and Heidi Grossman.
BEST OF THE REST
-Fatima overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit with five second-half goals in 18 minutes as the Tigers defeated Hope, 5-1, in Division IV girls soccer. Amanda Francisco had three goals, including the game-tying tally 12:43 into the second half. Nicole Zina added a pair of goals, including the game-winner three minutes later.
-Unbeaten Narragansett (7-0-2) staved off upset-minded Lincoln (3-5), overcoming a 2-1 deficit by scoring two second-half goals en route to a 3-2 victory in Division III girls soccer. Ali Buxton scored the game-tying goal and Gabby LaBove tallied the game-winner with 15 minutes to play.
-Tolman's Jackie Ciesynsky scored off a rebound with five minutes to play as the Tigers played to a 1-1 tie with Rogers in a battle of Division IV girls soccer leaders. Tricia Clark gave Rogers a 1-0 lead with a goal at 23:40 of the first half. Both teams are 8-1-1.
-With 30 minutes remaining, Portsmouth freshman Dylan Mello shook off a defender and from 18 yards out unloaded a quick shot into the back of the net for his first varsity goal, which ended up being the game-winner, as the Patriots defeated Hendricken, 2-1, in Division I soccer.
Portsmouth controlled the action for most of the game, forcing Hawks goalie Vincent Monti to make 23 saves. The Patriots improved to 5-4-2 and are the only team in D-I East to have a win against Hendricken this season. The Hawks fell to 5-2-2 and trail La Salle by two games in D-I Central.
-In a three-set marathon (4-6, 6-3, 7-5), Claire Kim and Noel Barlow won their match and sealed a 4-3 team win for Barrington over Wheeler in girls tennis.
YESTERDAY'S STARS
-Ashleigh Guy scored four goals and assisted on another as North Smithfield defeated Cranston East, 5-2, in Division III girls soccer.
-Ponaganset's Patrick Harkin made 14 saves and Rogers' Shun Sakai finished with 11 as the two teams played to a scoreless tie in Division III boys soccer.
-Ivannah Perez netted four goals, leading Central Falls to a 5-0 victory over Central in Division IV girls soccer.
-Seli DaGraca and Carla Goncalves each scored a goal as Shea improved to 8-2 in Division IV girls soccer with a 2-0 win over Mount Pleasant.
-Marlon Giraldo scored the only goal as 6-3-2 Central Falls blanked South Kingstown (7-2-1), 1-0, in a matchup of Division I boys soccer contenders.
-Chrissy Affleck scored the goal as Lincoln beat North Kingstown, 1-0, in field hockey.
-Lauren Pallister, assisted by Guila Basile, scored the winning goal as East Greenwich nipped Cumberland, 4-3, in field hockey. The Avengers were up, 4-1, but the Clippers rallied for two goals.
-Ben Nadeau scored the only goal, assisted by Adam Crawford , as North Kingstown beat Cumberland, 1-0, in boys Division I soccer.
-Winston Smith recorded a hat trick, leading Hope to a 4-1 victory over East Providence in Division I boys soccer.
TODAY'S BEST
East Greenwich (7-1-1), the Division I-South leader, travels to Providence to take on La Salle (7-0-2), the Division I-North leader, in a girls soccer game tonight at 7.
