Game day: Tiverton golfers grab a piece of first place

YESTERDAY'S TOP GAME

Tiverton's Matt Sterling shot a 2-under-par 33 at Green Valley Country Club as the Tigers handed Barrington its first East Division golf loss of the year and moved into a first-place tie with the Eagles, both at 11-1. Ben Conway added an even-par 35 for Tiverton. Barrington was led by Matt Osman, who shot a 1-under 34.

BEST OF THE REST

Moses Brown reached the SENE Division I girls lacrosse championship with an 18-12 victory over Lincoln School. Emily Abbood finished with five goals while Wes Stevenson added two goals and five assists.

The second-seeded Quakers will play tomorrow at top-seeded Portsmouth Abbey, which reached the finals with a 14-10 victory over Wheeler. Steph Perez and Perry Markell each had three goals for the Ravens. Perez also had three assists.

The Rocky Hill boys lacrosse team cruised to a 13-0 victory over St. Andrew's in the semifinals of the SENE Division II playoffs. Ben Leblanc scored five goals for the top-seeded Royals, now 9-2 overall and 9-0 against SENE competition. They'll face the winner of the Falmouth Academy/St. Thomas More semifinal in the championship.

The Cranston West girls lacrosse team handed Prout just its third loss of the season with a 10-6 victory in Division II. Jen Chianesi scored four goals and Jenna Matisewski had three for the Falcons (6-7), who led, 6-1, at the half. West had lost to the Crusaders, 10-2, on April 17.

Rogers (4-9) wrapped up its subpar season on a positive note, beating Portsmouth (9-5), 10-4, in a Division II fast-pitch softball game. Pitcher Kaitlyn Renshaw went 4-for-4 and catcher Marina Zambrotta went 3-for-4 with two RBI and three stolen bases for the Vikings.

Led by six goals and three assists from Dylan Schmitz and four goals and two assists from Adam Tracey, Moses Brown defeated Hyde, 18-7, to advance to tomorrow's SENE Division I boys lacrosse championship game. Moses Brown plays the Portsmouth Abbey-Wheeler winner.

Harold Ouimette's single up the middle with the infield drawn in drove in Billy Evans in the bottom of the 12th to give Classical a 3-2 victory over Juanita Sanchez in Division III baseball.

Cumberland improved to 17-1 with victories over Ponaganset and Davies, 170-199-205, in North Division golf. Derek Jensen shot a 38 to lead the Clippers.

Eric Anderson had an RBI triple and came home on a passed ball as Barrington scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Narragansett, 4-3, in a Division II baseball game.

Brittany Taylor doubled in the tying run and scored the game-winner on bases-loaded walk to Kate Coutu in the bottom of the eighth inning as South Kingstown defeated Warwick Vets , 2-1, in a Division I fast-pitch softball game. Laura Nigro had 12 strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.

YESTERDAY'S STARS

Samantha Shawn tossed a complete game, with 13 strikeouts, as Westerly defeated Coventry, 3-1, in Division I fast-pitch softball.

Greg Morris shot a 2-under-par 33 at Cranston Country Club, helping East Greenwich to Central Division wins over Cranston West and West Warwick in golf.

J.J. Gilbane scored six of his seven goals in the second half, helping PCD break a 5-5 halftime tie en route to a 13-5 win over Barrington in Division I boys lacrosse.

J.J. Sorensen hit a solo homer and was a triple shy of the cycle, and Greg Blake had a three-run triple, leading Westerly to a 6-4 victory over Middletown in Division II baseball.

With two outs, Dan Attwood singled in Ben Dacunha in the bottom of the seventh inning as Cumberland beat Woonsocket , 2-1, in Division I baseball. The Villa Novans' Pete Gauthier hit a home run.

TODAY'S BEST

East Greenwich can close the gap on first-place Narragansett when the 12-2 Avengers play at the 14-1 Mariners in Division II girls lacrosse. Game time is 3:30.
