YESTERDAY'S TOP EVENT

The Burrillville baseball team improved to 11-1 in Division II-North with a 3-0 victory over second-place Mount St. Charles, which dropped to 9-3.

Lee Sulham pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk to lead the Broncos. Shawn McConnell's two-out single in the third inning scored Sulham for a 1-0 Broncos' lead.

In the fourth, Tim Gelinas singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Mitch Jenness.

Burrillville scored its third run in the fifth when Chris Cabral singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error.

BEST OF THE REST

Justin Carlson netted the winning goal with about four minutes remaining as East Greenwich edged Prout, 6-5, in Division II boys lacrosse. Carlson finished with three goals, while Kyle Behbehani had two and Brandon Sawyer recorded another for the Avengers, who take over first place from Prout with the win. Mike Young scored a game-high four goals and Will Kopelcheck added another goal and three assists for the Crusaders. East Greenwich is 7-1, while Prout is 6-1.

Matt Waskiewicz had a triple in the fourth inning to drive in Curtis Burke and rally Mt. Hope over Barrington, 7-6, in Division II baseball. Burke went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Cameron Stanzione went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Mt. Hope. Matt Capone and Greg Nugent each hit doubles and drove in a run for Barrington.

Steve Fuller and Brendan O'Brien combined for 15 kills and 8 blocks and Eddy DelSignore had 15 digs to help Bishop Hendricken blank East Greenwich, 3-0, and remain undefeated in Division I boys volleyball. The Hawks, who won the match, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21, improve to 14-0, while East Greenwich falls to 10-4.

Mandy Shurgot reached base on an error and scored on another error as Woonsocket edged La Salle, 2-1, in Division I-North fast-pitch softball. Bethany Moretti pitched a 3-hitter and struck out seven for Woonsocket; Meaghan Dendy pitched a 4-hitter and struck out nine for La Salle. Woonsocket improves to 10-1; La Salle falls to 8-3.

The Portsmouth baseball team pounded out 15 hits and pitcher Ryan Westmoreland held East Greenwich to one hit while striking out 10 as the Patriots defeated the Avengers, 13-3, in a Division II-South battle for first place. Brendan Solecki went 3-for-4 with five RBI, Nick Grande had two hits and knocked in three, and Dylan Stone went 2-for-3 with two RBI for Portsmouth, which improved to 10-1. The Avengers fell to 8-3.

Hannah Knowles scored the game-winning goal with 1:23 remaining, giving the Rocky Hill girls lacrosse team a 9-8 victory over Providence Country Day in SENE-Division II lacrosse between previously undefeated teams. Goaltender Elisa Armstrong made two saves in the last 20 seconds to preserve the win for the Royals.

YESTERDAY'S STARS

Brittany Annunziata went 3-for-4 with two RBI to power Smithfield past North Smithfield, 11-3, in Division II-North fast-pitch softball.

Josh Harrison went 2-for-4 and scored two runs, and Ricardo Ilarraza had two doubles, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Pilgrim baseball squad in its 11-4 win over Woonsocket in Division I.

North Kingstown's Taylor Kenney was 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI as the Skippers defeated Cranston East, 13-2, in Division I baseball.

Moses Brown pitcher Devon Hopkins had two hits and four RBI while allowing just four hits in a 7-1 victory over Classical in Division II fast-pitch softball.

Skyluar Neal hit a solo homer in the sixth inning and struck out 15 batters to help Davies slide by Prout, 4-2, in a Division II baseball game.

Barrington's Matt Broome shot a 2-under-par 34 at Rhode Island Country Club and the Eagles (151) defeated Middletown (187) and Rogers (196.)

Ryan Beique slugged a two-run home run, Kevin Dawber drilled two doubles and Kyle Regnault had a triple and single, helping La Salle outslug Coventry, 18-6, in Division I baseball.

Mary Rogers fired in five goals and Kiranya Tipirneini, Nickki Gilbane and Sarah Quinn each had three as Lincoln School topped Falmouth Academy, 19-6, in SENE Division I lacrosse.

Jamey Campellone hit a 3-run homer and a double and finished with five RBI as Moses Brown downed Tolman, 11-1, in Division II-North baseball.

Kayla Cilley homered in the top of the seventh to tie the game, 1-1, then drove in the game-winning run with a double in the ninth, sparking Warwick Vets past Toll Gate, 4-1, in nine innings in nonleague fast-pitch softball.

Rob Walsh netted six goals, guiding Hendricken past La Salle, 17-7, in a Division I boys lacrosse match.
