SP -- Westerly's Samantha Gawrych was a double-winner at the University of Rhode Island "Rhody Classic" on Saturday, one of a number of local champions at the annual meet.

Also on Saturday, La Salle's Meg Maloney was the girls' weight throw titlist, and Hendricken's John Freeman the boys' weight champ at the Dartmouth Relays.

At the Rhody meet, held at the Mackal Fieldhouse, Gawrych clocked 1 minute, 37 seconds in taking the 600 meters; that time is two seconds off the Rhode Island state record. She captured the 3,000 meters in 10:30.0. Cranston West's Erin Lagasse was a close second in 10:30.0.

At the Dartmouth meet in Hanover, N.H., the Rams' Maloney unloaded the 20-pound weight 48 feet, 2 1/2 inches (14.69 meters). In the boys' competition, the Hawks' Freeman threw the 25-pound ball 63-6 1/4 (19.36).

La Salle Mallory Denniston placed third in the girls' weight throw at 39-9 1/4 (12.12), while in the boys' event, the Rams' Matt Maloney was second (59-5 1/2, or 18.12 meters). Hendricken's Nick Chase came in fourth with a throw of 55-7 1/2 (16.95).

Also at Dartmouth, Rogers' Keelan Maguire finished ninth in the girls' pole vault event with a height of 9-5 3/4 (2.89).
