Wednesday, March 22, Journal sports writer Carolyn Thornton
and members of the Mount St. Charles girls ice hockey team, which reclaimed
the state crown earlier this month by sweeping Bay View in the best-of-three
title series. Mount tri-captains Taryn Lapierre, Ashley Rondeau and Amanda
Tassoni stopped by to chat about what it's like to play for a squad that
has won three out of the four state championships since the Interscholastic
League began.

Wednesday, March 15. Journal sports writer Carolyn Thornton and members
of the La Salle gymnastics team. Senior Ali Fogarty, who was crowned
this year's state all-around champion, once again helped guide La Salle to the
Division I state team gymnastics title this season. The Rams claimed at least
two of the top five spots in each of the four events, en route to securing their
fourth consecutive championship. Fogarty, along with fellow gymnasts Meghan
Fogarty (a freshman and also Ali's sister) and junior Kerri Estrella, will share
their thoughts on La Salle's memorable season. .

Wednesday, Nov. 9. With Lindsay Paiva leading the way, the Coventry girls cross
country team upset five-time defending champion North Kingstown to win the R.I.
Interscholastic League State Championship on Sunday at Ponaganset. Paiva's 20th
place finish, along with strong performances by Kaitlyn Grimshaw (11th) Laura
Schmitz (17th), Kristen Walker (26th) and Samantha Eagleson (27th), gave the
Knotty Oakers a seven-point margin of victory over the Skippers, 95-102.

its second straight undefeated season on Sunday, capturing its second consecutive

Rosenberg and Jill Lambiase.

Providence girls volleyball team, which has established an impressive winning
tradition in recent years, capturing each of the last four Division I State
Championships. They show no signs of stopping either. Undefeated at 12-0 in
I-North heading into this week, East Providence has swept its opponents in 9
out of its first 12 league matches.

Charles All-State tennis players Meghan McCooey, Nicole Breting, Michaela
Cerrone
and Danielle Falvo. The Mount St. Charles girls tennis team
has enjoyed great success in recent years, most recently capturing the 2004
Division I State Championship, and this year's captains have played a major
role in that success. Meghan McCooey, Nicole Breting, Michaela Cerrone and
Danielle
Falvo have already earned at least one All-State selection during their high
school careers, with McCooey and Breting receiving three All-State nods apiece.
With a lot of hard work and determination, they hope the ball continues to
bounce their way this fall.

Wednesday, Sept. 7: Ryan McCormick, senior tri-captain and defensive
standout for the five-time defending Division I state champion La Salle soccer
team.
McCormick was a sweeper on the Ram defense that held opponents to seven goals
last season. He was also a member of the Region I Olympic development pool
as
one of the top players on the East Coast.

Thursday, Aug. 25: Chelsea Marandola, who is only a few months removed
from an incredible high school basketball career at Johnston where she became
the state's all-time leading scorer and was one of only three players to earn
first-team All-State honors four times. Selected as the 2004 Words Unlimited
co-Schoolgirl Athlete of the Year after also helping the Panthers to their
first-ever state volleyball crown and winning the Class C championship in
the 800 meters
outdoors, she is now preparing for her first year at Providence College, where
she will play basketball for the Lady Friars under new coach Phil Seymore.

Wednesday, Aug. 24: Tom Webb, who enters his final high school cross
country season as the defending state champion after soaring to the top of
the ranks with a time of 16:04 at last year's state meet. This time he will be
representing Bishop Hendricken, though. After competing for his first 2 1/2
years at Barrington High School, Webb transferred to Hendricken mid-way through the indoor track season. He missed a chance to compete at the Indoor State Championships as a result, but after sitting out the required amount of time, as outlined by the Interscholastic League, he resumed competing for the Hawks last spring and successfully defended his 1,500-meter outdoor title. According to the league's transfer rule, Webb will also be ineligible for 50 percent of the upcoming cross country season, but will be back in plenty of time to try to defend that crown, as well.
