Food recall announced in R.I.

01:00 AM EDT on Saturday, May 3, 2008

The state Health Department is notifying residents of a food recall from a brand sold at Shaw’s Supermarkets, due to possible bacteria contamination.

Gourmet Boutique announced a voluntary recall of multiple products due to possible Listeria monocytognes contamination, a bacteria that can cause serious infection, even death. The risk for serious illness or death is highest among the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Gourmet Boutique LLC of Jamaica, N.Y., has recalled the following products, all of which bear Gourmet Boutique on the label:

The USDA has said there is a “reasonable possibility” that the use of the recalled product may cause “serious adverse health consequences.”

Symptoms for a person with listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, headache, stiff neck, confusion or convulsions can occur, according to the CDC.
