Flu Update

Q. I have three children at colleges out of state. I am concerned about them receiving the swine flu vaccination. Are there any plans for college-age students to get the vaccination over their Thanksgiving or Christmas breaks?
A. Swine-flu vaccine clinics will be held for Rhode Islanders of college age, whether or not they attend college in state. But they won’t occur over the Thanksgiving break. A more likely time is before or after Christmas, said Health Department spokeswoman Carol Hall-Walker. Because the supply of vaccine is unpredictable, the Health Department had not yet scheduled these clinics for college-age people. But Hall-Walker said they will be open to Rhode Islanders who attend college out of state as well as those who don’t attend college. Seasonal flu Vaccine against seasonal flu is in very limited supply. Pediatricians this week will get doses for children ages 3 to 18. Live-virus nasal-spray vaccine will go to some doctors this week — but the nasal spray can only be used in healthy people ages 2 to 49. One public flu clinic remains: • Wednesday, Nov. 11: Noon to 5 p.m., Twin River Casino Event Center, 100 Twin River Rd., Lincoln, 1,000 shots for adults only. H1N1/swine flu The state will continue vaccinating children against swine flu at schools around the state this week. The clinics for Monday and Tuesday are listed below. To find the date for the H1N1 swine flu clinic at your schools, check projo.com and look for “School-based flu shots start Nov. 2.” Children who are younger than school age (and older than six months) and pregnant women can obtain swine-flu vaccine from their doctors, as supplies allow.
