Flu Update

01:00 AM EST on Sunday, November 8, 2009

Q. My son, age 13, just got the regular flu shot, and his school is giving the H1N1 shot on Nov. 18. Is that too soon? Does he need to wait a certain amount of time between the different types of flu shots?

A. As long as he’s receiving shots, and NOT the nasal-spray vaccine, there is no waiting period. In fact, he could take both shots on the same day.

But those who get the nasal-spray vaccine must wait three or four weeks between doses. Vaccinations

Seasonal flu

Vaccine against seasonal flu is in very limited supply. Pediatricians this week will get doses for children ages 3 to 18. Live-virus nasal-spray vaccine will go to some doctors this week –– but the nasal spray can only be used in healthy people ages 2 to 49.

Two public flu clinics, offering seasonal-flu shots for adults, have been scheduled:

• Today: "Head to Toe” Health Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., JCCRI Social Hall, 401 Elmgrove Ave., Providence. 100 shots.

• Wednesday, Nov. 11: Noon to 5 p.m., Twin River Casino Event Center, 100 Twin River Rd., Lincoln, R.I. 1,000 shots.

H1N1/swine flu

The state will continue vaccinating children against swine flu at schools around the state this week. The clinics for Monday are listed below. To find the date for the H1N1 swine flu clinic at your schools, check projo.com and look for “School-based flu shots start Nov. 2.”

Children who are younger than school age (and older than six months) and pregnant women can obtain swine-flu vaccine from their doctors, as supplies allow.
