First round of N.E. Women’s Championship is (mostly) a wash

EAST PROVIDENCE — Like many other events around Rhode Island, Tuesday's rain played havoc with the New England Women's Golf Association Championship Tournament at Metacomet Country Club.

Only 63 of the 108 players got to finish the first round of the tourney. Three times play was suspended because of the weather and play was stopped at 7:15 p.m.

Marion Webster, a member of both the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Women's Golf Association who plays out of The Kittansett Club in Marion finished with a 1-under-par 70. Coming in 1-over-par at 72 and in second place is Kerri Connolly of Indian Pond Country Club of Kingston, followed by a 4-over 75s by both Natalie Galligan of Brae Burn Country Club in Newton and Tara Watt of Derryfield Country Club in Manchester, N.H.

Tied at 5-over 76 are Lisa McGill of The Misquamicut Club in Westerly; Isabel Southard of Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass.; Wallace Hamerton of Olde Barnstable Golf Club in Massachusetts; Mary Chamberlain of Cummaquid Golf Club in South Dennis, Mass.; and Alexa Rancourt of Sable Oaks Country Club in South Portland, Maine.

The other Rhode Islanders to finish included Kibbe Reilly, RICC, 81; Marisa White, Trigg, 83; Robert Hunt, Wannamoisett, 83; Robyn English, Warwick, 85; Sarah Rizk, Valley, 86; and Nancy Chaffee, RICC, 87; Jenna Masnyk, Kirkbrae, 87; Felica Revens, Potowomut, 89.
