EAST PROVIDENCE — Adam Long, a senior at Duke from Lake St. Louis, Missouri, followed an opening-round 67 with a dazzling 64 Thursday, setting a 36-hole scoring record of 131 and taking a two-stroke lead midway through the 48th Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club.
Playing in ideal scoring conditions, a total of 33 players broke par in yesterday's second round. Midway through the tournament, there are 28 players under par.
"There's been no wind," said Denny Glass, the tournament director. "The greens are running slower than normal, so they're not putting defensively. And, because the greens are soft, they've been able to fire at the pins."
Tied for second, two shots behind Long, are Bud Cauley of Jacksonville, Fla., and David May of Auburn, N.Y. Defending champion Brendan Gielow of Muskegon, Mich., is one of six players tied for 11th at 135, 3-under-par.
Wannamoisett member Charlie Blanchard leads the local contingent. He's tied for 35th at 1-over, following rounds of 69 and 70.
