Reader responds: Make it from scratch
11:53 AM EST on Monday, January 14, 2008
This is a simple one: Stop buying pre-made goods and cook from scratch. There is less fat salt and sugar.
Use a crock pot to cook stews, chili, soups beans etc. Simple, cheaper meals will save money and calories as well as be healthier.
Shop for on sale items stock up on those so when they are not on sale you can eat them: i.e. eat chicken when on sale and pork when it is cheaper, cutting up large pieces of meat or whole chickens to get smaller portions CAN also be cheaper, but not always. I still remember buying chuck steak for $0.29 pound and making ground beef from it when we were students and grilling it for steaks. (1966- ish)
Realizing:
1 not everyone knows how and
2 no time
serving as many fresh foods and fewer chips, sodas and artificially flavored foods will result in at least healthier eating.
I can afford not to but, I buy produce at the Price Rite stores.
Breast feeding is a great way to save money if you are pregnant and thinking of bottles even if for a few weeks.
