Samuel Adams lightens up for summer

01:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, July 6, 2005

Samuel Adams offers both year-round and seasonal styles to the tune of 18. Three particular brews are perfect for warmer weather -- Sam Adams Light, Samuel Adams Hefeweizen, and the seasonal Samuel Adams Summer Ale.

Dating back to a 700-year-old legend, medieval brewers used a special West African spice called Grains of Paradise to increase the chance for love. Samuel Adams brewers use this same spice in their recipe for Samuel Adams Summer Ale. While the legend of beer as an aphrodisiac may not be true, the spice adds a peppery citrus note to the brew, which enhances the tangy taste of lemon peel and floral notes of tropical fruits, such as mangoes and peaches that derives from the ale fermentation.

For Hefeweizen, a contemporary American-style beer, the brew is unfiltered, retaining a natural haze from malt proteins, crisp, bright flavors of wheat, and fruity ester complexity from ale yeast.

Sam Adams Light is brewed using only the four basic ingredients in beer: water, yeast, Noble hops and two-row malt. This brew became the first-ever light beer to win a medal at a German Beer Competition at the Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft in Germany.

Summer Ale pairs with watercress or arugula salads, or with traditional summer favorites such as grilled chicken, grilled fish, corn on the cob, and potato salad.

Sam Adams Light pairs well with chicken or fish, such as grilled shrimp. Hefeweizen, a traditional beer style with a fruity aroma, complements fruit or vegetable salads. It also pairs with fresh oysters, lox or ceviche.
