The New England Oyster Festival and the 18th Annual Aquafina Taste of Rhode Island will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Newport Yachting Center. There will be competitions, shellfish speakers, chef demonstrations and more. The Glory of Garlic with chef Eve Formisano will be hosted by Ledges End Farm on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m outside under the Mimosa tree at Briggs/Boesch Farm 830 South Rd., East Greenwich. Formisano will discuss varieties of garlic, how to determine freshness and other garlic-flavored facts. She will also do a cooking demonstration. Pre-registration is required and the cost is $15. Bay Leaves Restaurant, 8220 Post Rd., Wickford, will hold a Mirassou Winemaker’s Dinner tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. David Mirassou, a sixth-generation Californian winemaker, will pair wines with a four-course dinner prepared by executive chef Tammie Watson which includes smoky eggplant bisque with sweet pepper yogurt, petit beef tenderloin with fingerling chips or grilled hen over braised apples and onions with herbed orzo pilaf and chocolate angel food cake with raspberry sauce and Chantilly crème. Vintage Restaurant, 4 South Main St., Woonsocket, will have a five-course Spanish Wine Dinner tonight. The evening will begin with a glass of Gramona Gran Cuvee Cava. Chef Brian Counihan’s menu will consist of a caramelized pear and arugula salad with Manchego cheese, diver scallop ceviche, pan-roasted Cape Cod halibut, crispy potato gnocchi and black trumpet mushrooms, grilled lamb steak frites with thyme sugar rub and smoked Spanish paprika frites. 195 Franklin Street restaurant, in Bristol, will feature guest chef Elizabeth Kearns preparing Mexican foods tomorrow, Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Special dishes include wild mushroom quesadillas, turkey mole with fried green tomatoes, serrano chili and corn tamales and coconut flan with Mexican sugar cookies. Maxie’s Bread, 9 Cedar Swamp Rd., Smithfield, (401-233-2233) will be at The Market At Cutler Mill, 137 Child St., Warren, (401) 247-0021 on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. offering samples of their wood-fired breads and doing an outdoor pizza grilling demonstration featuring Maxie’s Organic Pizza Shells.
L’Osteria Ristorante , 1703 Cranston St., Cranston, will host a wine dinner on Monday evening featuring wines from Sicily. Robert Goulet from Wine Marketing will be the speaker during the five course dinner. The cost is $75 which includes tax but not gratuity. For reservations call (401) 943-3140.
The Historic Waterfront District Fall Food Stroll on Main Street, New London, Conn., will be held Oct. 18 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Some 24 restaurants, cafes and specialty food shops will participant and create dishes incorporating fresh Connecticut grown produce and made-in-Connecticut food products, such as wines and condiments. Stroll buttons used for admission are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Admission includes a free drink coupon, samples of dishes served in all participating eateries and merchant specials. Buttons for students and children are $15, and do not include drink coupons. Live music will be performed in various locations throughout the district. Reservations can be made by sending a check, along with name, address and phone number, to New London Main Street, 165 State St., New London, Conn. 06320. Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival with more than 130 wineries, food, celebrity wine experts and chefs will be held Sept. 28 to 30. The first day of the festival features wine dinners prepared by Newport’s chefs in select restaurants with special menus pairing food and wine. Some of the restaurants are Asterisk, Castle Hill Inn and Resort, The Clarke Cooke House and 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar and Grille. Friday night will feature the Wine and Rosecliff Gala and then on Saturday, the highlight of the weekend will be the grand tasting and live Auction at Marble House. Art & Soul Coffee House returns to T’s, 1059 Park Ave, Cranston, with The Summer Cottage, a night of memorial, simplicity and reflection on Friday, Sept. 29, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. with paintings and a gallery talk with Anthony Tomaselli, poetry and story by Bill Comeau and acoustic song stylist Jeanne Murphy. Cindy Salvato will give three hour Italian food tours of historic Federal Hill on Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Stonington Vineyards will host the Harvest Wine & Food Festival on Sept. 30, and Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be wine tastings all day, educational tours of the wine cellar and sampling of foods from several New England vendors. The Up River Café, 37 Main St., Westerly, has appointed Terrence Maul as executive chef. Maul most recently worked at Red Stripe, Providence. He is a graduate of Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, N.Y.
The Madhouse Café in Pawtucket has closed. Though the official explanation is that it’s closed for renovations, the future of the months old restaurant is in doubt.
The Hi-Hat, Davol Square, Providence, (401) 453-6500, has a new executive chef, Billy Andrews and new chef de cuisine, George Daniels. Andrews is the proprietor of Caspita in Exeter and formerly owned Leon’s. New entrées include steak, chicken, pasta, fish and seafood. The restaurant will continue with a SIN (service industry night) menu on Mondays and the fixed price menu on Tuesday and Wednesday for $58 per couple including music. A themed Sunday brunch will be held the third Sunday of the month beginning Sunday, Oct. 15, with a gospel brunch featuring live music by the Benton Brothers. The brunch is À la carte.

Whole Foods Market, University Heights, 601 North Main St., Providence, has a menu for Rosh Hashanah. Among the items are honey lavender baked apples, handmade Matzo balls, fruit and nut salad, poached salmon platter, New Year’s sweet round challah and apple raisin strudel. Also, the market will hold a Dance & Dine Music Series every Thursday night from 5 to 7 p.m.
Crickets Restaurant, George Washington Highway, Smithfield, (401) 232-0300, will have Italian night every Thursday. The meal is an all you-can-eat buffet with a glass of wine or soft drink for $14.95.
The Barrington Community School will offer three cooking classes with Katie Roberts of Easy Entertaining, a catering company. The first, Tuscan Trio, will be held tomorrow, Tuscan Table on Sept. 28 and Buona Festa, Oct. 5. All classes will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at a private home in Barrington; directions will be mailed prior to the class. Classes are limited to eight participants. The cost of each course is $40 for Barrington residents and $45 non-residents, which includes both tuition and food supply fee.
