The bounty of the gardens at Rough Point, Doris Duke’s Newport home, will be featured at a meal Aug. 25 on the mansion’s lawn.
Newport Restoration Foundation
The Newport Restoration Foundation presents a culinary journey through three centuries of gardens and dining with events at three of its historic sites. Each evening will begin with a short guided stroll through the site’s garden where participants will learn about gardening techniques and traditional foods and then enjoy food and drink prepared by local chefs.
The first tour, “An Officer’s Meal at Prescott Farm,” is set for Tuesday, July 21, at the farm, 2009 West Main Rd., Middletown. Guests will relive the history of the 1700s as they dine like the officers who occupied Prescott Farm during the Revolutionary War. Chef Ian McIntyre of The Rhumbline cooks a menu inspired by traditional New England cookery, showcasing the heirloom varieties found in the site’s kitchen and herb gardens. Guests can watch the sunset while sipping rum punch and dining in the apple orchard.
“Sugar and Spice at Whitehorne House” on Tuesday, Aug. 11, focuses on flavors inspired by the maritime world of the 1800s. Samuel Whitehorne traded goods such as rum, gin, spices and chocolate, while his wife, Elizabeth, turned these ingredients into sweet desserts (found in her hand-written recipe book). They had fruit trees in their backyard, now a garden setting where guests can sample gelato from Cold Fusion and a variety of rum cocktail concoctions from Asterisk that evoke Newport’s historic involvement in the rum trade. The house is located at 416 Thames St., Newport.
“Dine like an Heiress at Rough Point” features dishes inspired by Doris Duke’s recipes on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Three courses highlight the bounty of Rough Point’s gardens as Kim Comfort of Spark Restaurant & Catering cooks. The dinner will be served on the mansion lawn, 680 Bellevue Ave., Newport.
The dinner tours take place from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $55 each for Prescott Farm and Rough Point dinners, $25 for Whitehorne dessert & drinks, or $120 for all three. Reservations are required.
Call (401) 846-4152 or visit newportrestoration.org/calendar. Rain dates are July 22, Aug. 12 and Aug. 26.
