Opening
Seven Stars Bakery opens its third café Friday, May 22, at Rumford Center. Owners Lynn and Jim Williams started with the 820 Hope St., Providence, store some 8 1/2 years ago and expanded to a second café at 342 Broadway, Providence, in 2007. The newest Seven Stars is in the former Rumford Baking Powder Co. factory at 20 Newman Ave., East Providence. The Williamses will serve the artisan breads, including sourdough, baguettes and olive, as well as their homemade breakfast pastries, coffee and grab-and-go sandwiches for lunch. The café will be open seven days a week. One baking facility at the Pawtucket Hope Artiste’s Village serves all stores, as does one phone number, (401) 521-2200.
On the menu
Bravo Brasserie, 123 Empire St., Providence, (401) 490-5112, bravobrasserie.com, serves jumbo shrimp and oysters for $1 Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. in the lounge. Monday Night Dinner for Two is available for $29.95 and includes salad, two entrees and a bottle of wine. For children, chicken fingers with fries has been added to the dinner menu and cookies and ice cream have been added to the dessert menu.
Fatty McGee’s, 55 Union St., Providence, (401) 831-3288, has a new summer menu with appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, burgers and main courses. New selections include potato pancakes; Guinness beef stew; a mushroom and Swiss burger; bangers and mash (two Irish sausages with potatoes and Fatty’s braised cabbage); and Shepherd’s pie. The pub is open daily serving lunch and dinner.
Frankie’s Fruit & Chocolate is among nine vendors whose goods will be featured at the back stage, celebrity gift lounge at the Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 7. Fred and Steve’s Steakhouse, Twin River, 100 Twin River Rd., Lincoln, (401) 475-8400, twinriver.com, offers guests 50 percent off any bottle of wine on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays through May.
Local 121, 121 Washington St., Providence, opens at noon Sunday, May 24. The Memorial Day weekend menu includes Taylor Bay scallops, lobster, Wolfe Neck Farms rib-eye, Vermont spring lamb and local asparagus, rhubarb, radishes and spinach. Reservations available for Sunday brunch, (401) 274-2121.
Pinelli’s Cafe at Night, 701 Quaker Lane, West Warwick, (401) 821-8828, plans theme dinners monthly. The first, a wine dinner featuring local seafood and local wines, is in early June. Other themes will focus on the season.
The Pinelli-Marra Restaurant Group declares the summer of 2009 a “Seafood Summer,” as all of its restaurants will offer fresh seafood all summer at value prices. The chefs are creating special menu items centered around the freshest seafood prepared “Rhode Island style.” Each of the group’s restaurants will offer daily seafood specials, include a raw bar at some locations with littlenecks and oysters on the half shell, lobster, calamari, clam rolls and chowder. The traditional New England summer seafood celebration begins Memorial Day weekend and continues through Labor Day. Sardella’s Italian Restaurant, 30 Memorial Blvd. West, Newport, (401) 849-6312, has a new spring menu by executive chef Kevin Fitzgerald with an emphasis on southern Italian Cuisine and a new wine list that features a larger selection of affordable Italian wines. In addition, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday dinner specials continue throughout the summer and include dinner for two from a select menu plus a select bottle of wine for $24. The special is served from 5 to 10 p.m.
Tyler Point Grille, 32 Barton St., Barrington, (401) 247-0017, tylerpointgrille.com, celebrates its 12th anniversary with 12-for-$12 specials starting Thursday, May 21, and continuing through June. Mix and match a choice of 12 dinners and bottles of wine for $12 each. Entrées include grilled seafood and chicken selections, along with a variety of seasonal pasta dishes.
3 Steeple Street Bistro & Bar, 125 Canal St., Providence, (401) 272-3620, is serving a new spring menu that includes Cajun-style blackened salmon, goat cheese and thyme empanadas as well as corn meal and pecan-encrusted catfish. Monday is Burger and Beer Day, where customers can get any of the house burgers with a side and a beer for $9.95. Burger and Beer Specials are available every Monday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Uno Chicago Grill offers its first gluten-free veggie pizza this month featuring peppers, onions and mushrooms.
Farmers’ and other market openings
The Coastal Growers’ Market at Casey Farm, 2325 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown (Saunderstown), is open every Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon, through Nov. 7. Vendors include Casey Farm, the Alternative Food Cooperative, Wakefield; Barden Family Orchard, North Scituate; Besto Pesto, Pawtucket; Farmstead Cheese, Providence; Ledge Ends Produce, East Greenwich; Matunuck Oyster Farm, Matunuck; New Harvest Coffee Roasters, Pawtucket, Pat’s Pastured, Saunderstown; Purple Pear of Providence; Robin Hollow Farm, Saunderstown; Seven Stars Bakery, Providence; Watson Farm, Jamestown, and West Bay Gourmet, Narragansett.
Providence Open Market will be held at Lippitt Park, 1015 Hope St., on Providence’s East Side beginning Saturday, May 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The market features edibles and hand crafted goods from local artisans and will be open every Saturday through June 20. The market takes a hiatus for the summer and reopens in the fall on Saturdays, Sept. 12 through Oct. 17.
South Kingstown Chamber of Commerce Farmers’ Market, 230 Old Tower Hill Rd., Wakefield, opens Sunday, May 17, from 2 to 6 p.m. Participating local producers include Healy Farm (fruits and vegetables), Matunuck Oyster Farm (oysters) Red Horse Farm (plants and flowers) and Jack Casey (kettle corn). The market is open every Sunday through Sept. 6.
Coming up
The Barrington Community School, 283 County Rd., Barrington, sponsors a Culinary Walking Tour in Boston’s North End Wednesday, June 3. Michele Topor leads participants on a three-hour North End Market Tour. The event includes a brief history of Boston Italian immigrants and visits to specialty food shops where tour goers can sample Italian delicacies and learn simple, yet special, cooking tips. There will be free time after the tour to dine out at one of the North End restaurants independently and do a little shopping before departure. Morning departure from Barrington is at 7:30 a.m. followed by a Providence pickup at 7:50 a.m. and return by 5:30 p.m. The cost is $75 and includes the motor coach. The Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl is set for June 9 through 11, noon to 8 p.m., at Boston City Hall Plaza. More than 40 flavors from Ben & Jerry’s, Baskin-Robbins, Breyers, Brigham’s, Spasso Sorbet and Gelato, Edy’s Grand Ice Cream, Garelick Farms, Gifford’s, Haagen-Dazs and HP Hood will be served to support cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 3 to 9 and free for children 2 and younger. Wine events
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island offers a Sakonnet Vineyards tour, wine tasting and hike May 30, 1 to 4 p.m. The program starts with a guided hike led by an Audubon expert, followed by a tour of the facility and ending with a toast and sampling of wines on the deck. Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery, 417 Hixbridge Rd., Westport, (508) 636-3423, ext. 2, westportrivers.com, hosts the Local Wine and Cheese Makers Dinner Saturday, June 6, at the winery in the Long Acre House facility. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a private tour of the vineyard conducted by Bill Russell. A four-course meal, paired with Westport Rivers’ wines and local cheeses provided by Barbara Hanley of Shy Brothers Farm, Westport, and Fiore di Nonno of Somerville, Mass., owner of Lourdes Smith, will be served immediately after the tour. Tickets are $75.
The winery also hosts A Taste of Westport, a wine and food festival, June 20, 1 to 4 p.m. The event, held under a tent on the winery’s lawn, features local restaurants, caterers and producers serving small samples to taste, as well as an array of locally grown and produced wines and beer. Other features include a cash raw bar featuring locally sourced shellfish, live music and vendor items for purchase. Tickets are $45 (cash raw bar and vendor items for sale excluded). The event is rain or shine and for guests 21 and older. Advance sales available only at Westport Rivers or its online store.
