This weekendThe American Institute of Wine and Foods — R.I. Chapter, presents olive oil expert Lorenzo Caponetti at New Rivers, 7 Steeple St., Providence, on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. There will be a reception, presentation and dinner. Caponetti will share his knowledge of olive oils while guests enjoy chef Bruce Tillinghast’s four-course, olive oil-inspired meal. For the full menu and reservation form, visit the AIWF, R.I. At the dinner the AIWF will announce the recipients of the 2006 AIWF Rhode Island Patricia Tillinghast Memorial Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarships are awarded to two Johnson & Wales University students from Rhode Island.
White Horse Tavern, 26 Marlborough St., Newport, (401) 849-3600, will host a Paul Hobbs wine dinner on Friday at 6 p.m. Six courses will be paired with wines. The cost is $75 plus tax and gratuity.
Douglas Wine & Spirits, East Providence, hosts the second in a series of wine events — The Wines of Italy — on Monday at 5:45 p.m. It will be held at Cattails City Grill and the cost is $55, inclusive. L’Osteria Ristorante, 1703 Cranston St., Cranston, (401) 943-3140, will host a wine dinner on Monday at 6:30 p.m. featuring wines from Washington and Oregon. Some of the wines are Columbia Winery Cellar Master Riesling, Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir, Meditrina Syrah, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir, a Cabernet Sauvignon by Hogue Cellars. Robert Goulet from Wine Marketing will be the speaker. The dinner will be five courses and the cost is $75. Reservations required.
84 High Street Café, Westerly, (401) 536-7871, will hold an Australian Wine Dinner Monday at 6 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $75 inclusive. Among the pairings are macadamia crusted chicken and sweet potato with Pillar Box Shiraz wine.
Cindy Salvato will hold two Shopping Federal Hill tours on Feb. 17 and 24. Meet retailers, chefs, bakers and ravioli makers and receive samples of cheese, antipasto, bread, wine and cookies. Taste of the Towns, sponsored by the Seekonk Kiwanis, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Johnson & Wales Inn, Route 44, Seekonk. Along with local restaurant food tastings, there will be a wine tasting from a variety of distributors. All proceeds go to grants for daycare programs for Seekonk families. The donation is $30. Mariana’s Gourmet Takeout & Catering, 991 Oaklawn Ave., Cranston, (401) 787-0797, is introducing heart healthy
menu specials to its daily offering. These include low-carb, low-calorie entrees of grilled balsamic chicken with fire roasted red pepper and seasoned asparagus, baked haddock with salsa and grilled lemon, roasted turkey breast with pears and roasted salmon with Thai basil.
Nat Porter Restaurant, 125 Water St., Warren, (401) 289-0373, has a new list of boutique wines selected by owner Jennifer Vincent. The restaurant serves Tuesday through Sunday from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
Friendly’s is offering Friendly’s Put 2 & 2 Together which features pairing two entrée items and two sides that include home-style mashed potatoes, rice, golden fries, coleslaw, garden vegetables, corn, broccoli and applesauce. The entrees include sirloin steak tips, Southwest BBQ steak, cheddar Jack chicken, grilled flounder, sirloin steak, friend shrimp and BBQ chicken. This promotion runs until Feb. 18.
The Barrington Community School will offer cooking classes with Katie Roberts of Easy Entertaining, a catering company. The classes are Divine Valentine Dining, Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Italian Entertaining, Tuesday, Feb. 27, 7 to 9 p.m.; and Tuscan Trio, for eight participants only. The course fees for each are $40 for Barrington residents and $45 for non-residents, plus a $5 registration fee. Shape Up R.I. will hold a cooking demonstration with Mary Flynn, of Brown University, an author and dietician, on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Brown BioMed Center, Room 202, 171 Meeting St., Providence. The presentation, Cooking Healthy, will explore the health benefits of olive oil. Flynn will prepare vegetable fried rice that participants will sample. Chef Matt Gennuso, owner of Chez Pascal, Providence, will be participating in the Guest Chef Series Cruise on Holland America Line.
