Westport Rivers Vineyard will host the 2008 Coastal Wine Trail Kick Off on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. This two-hour tasting event will feature samples from its winery as well as from Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod, Langworthy Farm Winery, Newport Vineyards, Greenvale Vineyards, Sakonnet Vineyards and Running Brook Vineyard. The Green Grocer, 934 East Main Rd., Portsmouth, (401) 683-0007, will hold a line-up of free events and classes this month beginning Thursday, May 15, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with Life Without Limits; Friday, May 22, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with Greens, What They Are and How to Eat Them with Aly Marks-Wood; and Thursday, May 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. with a Gluten Free Store Tour with Casey Cagney.

Castle Hill Inn & Resort, 590 Ocean Drive, Newport, (401) 849-3800, has a new tasting menu for the spring. It includes a three-course menu, $69; five-course tasting menu, $79 and $125 with wine pairings; and an eight-course degustation menu, $95 or $160 with wine pairings.

Mills Tavern, 101 North Main St., Providence, (401) 272-3331, will be offering its fixed-price menu all summer long for $29.95, Sunday through Thursday except holidays and Sundays in May.

D. Carlo Trattoria, 970 Douglas Pike, Smithfield, (401) 349-4979, has a new spring/summer menu by executive chef Chris Kattawar. Among the dishes are smoked salmon grill cheese with crème fraiche, gruyere, chives, red onion, house-made potato chips and more.

The Edgewood Café, a BYOB restaurant, has opened at 1864 Broad St. in the Edgewood section of Cranston, (401) 383-5550. The owner is John Walsh, who previously owned and operated the Providence Bookstore Café.

Flare Restaurant & Lounge, 577 Tiogue Ave., Coventry, (401) 615-8577, www.flarerestaurant.com, has a new menu with items by executive chef Aaron Thorpe including classic fish and chips with beer-battered sole and house-made meatloaf. The bar menu is offered between 4:30 and 6 p.m. and then again after 9. There is entertainment Friday and Saturday nights.

Devlin Rice of New Harvest Coffee Roasters placed ninth in the 2008 Northeast Regional Barista Championship held in Ithaca, N.Y. Competitors were required to make 12 drinks — 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and 4 signature drinks — in 15 minutes for a panel of four sensory judges and two technical judges. Devlin’s signature drink entitled Café Ete, summer coffee, is a single iced espresso garnished with a basil-, lemon- and cardamom-infused whipped cream. The Newport Yachting Center’s annual International Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-Off will be held Saturday, June 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The festival includes all-you-can-eat chowder and music. Back this year are John Maher and chef Michelle Donahoe from Muddy Maher’s of Kinsale, Ireland, and creative chowder champion the Blue Mermaid Chowder House & Bar and chef Steven Connelly from San Francisco. Ticket prices are $15 for adults in advance by Friday, May 23, and $20 the day of the event. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free with a paying adult. Foxwoods Resort Casino will honor all mothers with a variety of specials offered in its restaurants. Guests will be offered special menus in Al Dente, Veranda Café and Cedars Steak House.
