Al Forno’s Johanne Killeen and George Germon will appear at a free event this week to celebrate publication of their new book, On Top of Spaghetti (William Morrow, $24.95). Today at 5 p.m., the Brown Faculty Club and Brown Bookstore continue their Authors Who Cook Series, with the couple as they treat the audience to samples of their recipes, a wealth of insider tips, and sign copies of the cookbook. The People’s Liquor Warehouse hosts “Taste of the Hill,” a benefit for The Federal Hill House at Roger Williams Park Casino tomorrow from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Enjoy food from Federal Hill’s restaurants, music, a wine tasting, dessert wines, holiday shopping, and silent and live auctions. Newport Vineyards, Middletown, hosts a harvest event Saturday to celebrate the 2006 vintage. John Nunes reports much excitement about this outstanding vintage.
“The warm September and October has allowed us to leave grapes on the vine very late in the season,” said Nunes. “This is also the first year that our Nunes Farm Vineyard on Wyatt Road is in full production and we are looking forward to Spring releases of Pinot Grigio, Gewurtztraminer, Riesling and Merlot.”
The 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. event includes wine tasting and barrel samples from this year’s harvest and samples of specialty breads, cheeses, chocolates and other gourmet foods from several New England purveyors including Provencal Bakery, Newport Chocolates, Richart Chocolates, Amy’s Delights, Cabot Cheese, Sweet Berry Farm, Catanzaro Wine Biscuits, Edible Arrangements, and Bristol Harbor Homemade. Beatrice “Trixie” Wadson, joined by contributing writers and artists, will host a book signing of Balancing the Tides, a Newport Journal. Admission is $5 and includes sampling and a logo wineglass. The Bristol Historical & Preservation Society, 48 Court St., Bristol, hosts its annual Teddy Bear Tea on Sunday with seatings at 2 and 3:30 p.m. Children of all ages and their families are encouraged to bring their Teddy bears or other stuffed animals to share with those attending. The homemade food will include scones, Teddy bear tea biscuits with honey, cheese crackers, assorted tea sandwiches, plus vegetables and homemade desserts. Beverages will include tea, apple juice, milk and hot chocolate. This is a nut free menu. The tea is $10 for non-members, $7.50 for members and $5 for children under 12. The Holiday Scandinavian Brunch by Star Lodge No. 56, Vasa Order of America, will be Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Vasa Hall, 43 Bald Hill Rd., Cranston. Castle Hill Inn & Resort, 590 Ocean Drive, Newport, hosts a St. Francis Wine Dinner on Saturday with St. Francis president and CEO Chris Silva, who will lead guests through each selection of his family’s wines as they are paired with executive chef Jonathan Cambra’s four-course menu. After hors d’ouevres, the first course of Maine Lobster Boudin will be served with the 2004 Behler Reserve Chardonnay. Granite Acres Farm braised Venison Leg and bitter chocolate-merlot sauce will be paired with the herbal nose and plush chocolate, coffee, and plum aromas and flavors of the 2001 Behler Reserve Merlot. The entrée of grilled Hereford Beef Strip Loin with rosemary-pepper crust pairs with the 2002 Pagani Vineyard Reserve Zinfandel. Belgian Chocolate Chevre Cheese Mousse is matched with Croft Distinction Porto, Special Reserve, a vintage character port. The cost is $125 plus tax and gratuity. Nat Porter Restaurant will host a celebration for Coggeshall Farm on Thursday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., at the restaurant, 125 Water St., Warren. The night will include live music by Otis Read, Phil Edmunds and Cathy Clasper Torch and treats prepared by chefs Nigel Vincent and Adam Stein. Rhode Island Vegan Awareness will hold its annual Vegan Thanksgiving on Sunday, Nov. 19, at noon at the Radisson Airport Hotel, 2081 Post Rd., Warwick. The event will offer green salad with assorted toppings, butternut squash bisque, seitan with apple chestnut herb stuffing and more. A full cash bar will be available. Sharx Bar and Grill, 505 Atwood Ave., Cranston, has a new menu for lunch and bar food from the new kitchen team of Joshua Willey and Dave Goulart. Sharx is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to midnight.

Among the new offerings are: chive gnocchi crisp pancetta, three year aged mandarane provolone and white truffle oil, an East Coast oyster tasting, creamy potato leek soup, osetra caviar, mushroom agnolotti, Hudson Valley Foie roasted beef tenderloin, Crescent Farms duck breast and veal two ways.
22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille, Newport, (401) 841-8884, has a new seasonal menu for the fall created by executive chef Gary Jefferds and his culinary team. Some of the new menu items are: grilled Cajun pork porterhouse with sweet potato and apple mashed, topped with espresso BBQ sauce and served with the suggested pairing of Renwood Old Vines Zinfandel and Shrimp and Littlenecks sautéed with leeks, fennel, roasted tomatoes, chouric, and fingerling potatoes in a tomato broth served over jasmine rice, paired with Chateau Ste. Michelle’s Eroica Reisling.
CoCo Café, has opened outside at Citron, serving a quick breakfast or lunch at 5 Memorial Blvd., Providence, (401) 248-4867. The café serves organic coffee, house made pastries, sandwiches and more. The organic custom blend coffee was designed especially for the café by local roasters New Harvest Coffee Company. They serve a variety of specialty coffee drinks and assorted chilled bottled beverages.
Robert W. Zielinski of Smithfield, has earned the certified executive pastry chef designation from the American Culinary Federation (ACF). Zielinski is a pastry chef instructor at Johnson & Wales University, Providence. He is a member of ACF Rhode Island Chapter.
The Pinelli-Marra Restaurant Group announces that Len Jackson has joined the Post Office Café as general manager. He comes from Madhouse Cafe in Pawtucket where he was co-owner and chef. He and executive chef Tom Delmastro, are introducing a four-course fixed price menu for $24 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The menu will change regularly. Also, Bob LaMoia is the new chef at Pinelli’s Cucina and the Grille in North Smithfield. His LaMoia restaurant closed after a fire during the summer.
The Market at Cutler Mills, 137 Child St., Warren, will hold a seminar, Making it Through the Holidays on a Gluten Free Diet, presented by Linda Monahan, on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The seminar is free and offers a 10 percent discount on all purchases to Celiac Support Group members.
