ATTLEBORO — In September 2004, the newly appointed freshman class council at Attleboro High School set a long-term goal — to have an $8 ticket to its senior prom.

Very soon, it appeared that the goal, though not completely unrealistic, would be difficult to achieve, as prom tickets usually cost more than five times that amount — about $50 or $60 dollars per person.

But the goal had been set, and the council resolved to raise enough money over the next four years to meet it.

It planned a wide variety of creative fundraisers — collecting eight cents on the 8th of every month, selling birthday grams, organizing scavenger hunts, and even holding a mock incarceration, in which it “arrested” students and faculty and released them only after they had collected “bail” money from their friends and family.

Sure enough, four years later, the goal was a reality.

The Class of 2008’s senior prom, held at Roseland Function Hall in Taunton, Mass., not only cost just $8 for the seniors, but also saw an increase in the number of seniors in attendance compared to past years, said Rebecca E. Richard, the class co-adviser.

“They had the best time,” Richard said. “It was pretty impressive. They all had a part in making it happen.”

Valedictorian James A. Bensson said the class’s commitment and support to having an affordable prom was commendable.

“They’re really dedicated to their goals,” he said of his classmates. “They made it happen.”

Realizing another one of their goals Sunday afternoon, the 435 seniors received their diplomas at the school’s Tozier field.

Principal Donald W. Frederick said the graduating class, which is a tad bigger than usual, distinguished itself through both its academic achievements and community involvement. On the whole, the class’s scores on standardized tests such as the Scholastic Achievement Test improved compared to past years. About half the class will attend four-year college, enrolling at institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, the University of Rhode Island and the University of Connecticut. The others will attend two-year-college, work or enter military service.

Frederick said over the course of four years the seniors undertook various community service activities — from raking leaves for senior citizens to collecting “truck-loads” of clothing and food for the needy.

His message for the graduates was to continue their academic successes, while working hard to make a difference in their communities.

“Much has been given to you and now much is expected of you,” he said.

Richard said the Class of 2008 will continue to serve as a “model for what you can do if you try.”
