Incumbents fend off GOP challengers
01:00 AM EST on Tuesday, November 4, 2008
WEST WARWICK — Local incumbents will have a few more years in leadership, fending off challenges from a slate of Republican opponents.
In the House of Representatives, incumbent Patricia A. Serpa beat newcomer Ericka J. Atwell by 569 votes in West Warwick, according to unofficial figures from the state Board of Elections, while independent David Michael recieved 309 votes.
Town Council members David Gosselin Jr., Edward A. Giroux, Filomena Gustafson, and Peter F. Calci Jr. all won their districts handily. The closest race came between Calci and Republican Mark E. Bourget in Ward 5. Calci recieved 1,497 votes, compared to Bourget’s 1,365. Bourget launched an unsuccessful race for the same seat in 2006.
The School Committee will have one new member, in John A. Pettinicchio Jr., who also serves as the town sergeant. Pettinicchio beat Republican Christopher J. Boucher for the two-year seat up for grabs, while current School Committee members Bruce E. Vanasse and James A. Williamson Jr., both recieved four-year terms. Both Vanasse and Williamson were appointed to fill the unexpired terms of School Committee members who left the board unexpectedly.
Council member Angelo A. Padula Jr., of Ward 1, ran unopposed.
