ACLU suing West Warwick over sign law
01:00 AM EDT on Friday, October 10, 2008
WEST WARWICK — The Rhode Island Affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in Superior Court challenging the legality of a town ordinance that restricts the size of political campaign signs.
The suit was filed in behalf of perennial candidate Thomas K. Jones, who is pursuing a write-in campaign for the District 27 seat in the House of Representatives after losing a GOP primary for the seat last month.
Jones supporters who before the primary displayed 4-by-8-foot posters on their lawns opposing a planned $150-million resort were threatened with fines unless they took the posters down. Jones contended the content, not the size, dictated the town’s actions, which officials denied.
