It’s voting day for Senate 20

Residents of parts of Cumberland and Woonsocket go to the polls today in a special general election to fill the Senate District 20 seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Roger Badeau.

Rep. Roger Picard, D-Woonsocket, who is serving in his eighth term representing in House District 51, won the Democratic primary for the Senate seat in March, besting Rosina L. Hunt, of Woonsocket, and Thomas J. Scully, of Cumberland

Picard, 51, is the only person whose name appears on the ballot for today’s general election. He has been an attendance officer/social worker for the Woonsocket School Department for 11 years. He has said he wanted to run for the Senate because it would allow him to serve a larger constituency. Polling places

Some polling places have been combined for today’s election to fill the Senate District 20 seat, representing parts of Cumberland and portions of Woonsocket.

In Cumberland, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Precinct 0801, Cumberland High School, and Precinct 0812, Northern Town Garage, will vote at the Northern Town Garage, 66 Nate Whipple Highway.

Precinct 0802, Flat Street Housing, will vote at Flat Street Housing, 1 Flat St., in the community room.

Precinct 0803, John J. McLaughlin School, and Precinct 0804, Cumberland Hill Fire Station, will vote at Cumberland Hill Fire Station, 3502 Mendon Rd.

Precinct 0811, Diamond Hill Ski Lodge West, will vote at Diamond Hill Ski Lodge West, 4125 Diamond Hill Rd.

In Woonsocket, polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

District 1 will vote at Crepeau Court, 100 Front St.

District 2, which has been combined with Woonsocket Senior High School, will vote at No. 2 Fire Station, 5 Cumberland Hill Rd.

District 3, which has been combined with Leo A. Savoie School, will vote at the Chief Gerald P. Landry No. 4 Fire Station, 806 Mendon Rd.

District 4, which has been combined with Pothier School, will vote at Morin Heights Hall, 66 Morin Heights Blvd.
