LINCOLN — In the Town Council races, all incumbents running for re-election were returned to office, but the Democrats lost control of the five-member board, as three independents — including two of the incumbents — won seats.

On the School Committee, the Chairwoman Maryanne H. Roll had a scare and incumbent John C. Zangari was defeated.

Incumbent Town Council Democrats James R. Jahnz in the Fourth District and John W. Flynn in the second and independent Ronald A. McKenna in fifth were unopposed. Independent Third District councilman Keith E. Macksoud was reelected as well, but by a closer than expected 1,290 to 1,094 margin over Democrat Joseph A. Paiva.

In the race for the open seat in District One, where Democratic council president Jeremiah T. O’Grady had declined to run for reelection, newcomer and independent Arthur S. Russo Jr. defeated Democrat Timothy McMahon 1,034 to 856.

On the School Committee, Roll hung on to her seat. Roll was running for one of the two townwide seats on the committee and came in second. First place went to incumbent Julie M. Zito with 4,782. Roll collected 4,088 and Deborah A. Ambeault garnered 3,892. In the Second District, Zangari was defeated by Tracy Ann Cavanaugh, 944 to 763. Elizabeth Black Robson was unopposed in District Four.

There were two charter questions on the ballot as well. After last night’s vote, the next race for town administrator will lead to a four-year term instead of two years. But voters rejected a proposal to grant Town Council members four-year terms, rejecting it by a 59 to 41 percent margin.
