Council incumbents sweep in Barrington
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, November 5, 2008
BARRINGTON – The three Town Council incumbents, all Democrats, easily swept to victory yesterday, winning by more than 1,000 votes over the two Republican challengers.
June Speakman was the top vote-getter. She received 4,488 votes or 61 percent.
“I can’t explain how good that feels,” she said last night, interviewed while she was at the Democratic victory party at the Biltmore Hotel. “It’s a tough job. Some people get upset with the work we do. But on election night, when they show that kind of support, it’s very, very gratifying.”
Council President Jeffrey Brenner trailed just 73 votes behind her. Kate Weymouth was in third place with 60 percent and 4,333 votes.
The top GOP contender, Mark Gillooly, was 1,018 votes behind Weymouth.
Speakman, Brenner, and Weymouth had run as a team, saying that the town had functioned smoothly during their tenure.
“I think it’s a validation of the good work we’re trying to do,” Speakman said.
In the School Committee race, Chairman Patrick “Buzz” Guida, a Republican, and the other incumbent, Jim Hasenfus, a Democrat, were both reelected. Hasenfus garnered the most votes - 4,101, just 111 ahead of Guida.
The two other finishers in that contest were Robert E. Shea Jr. and Thomas R. Flanagan, both Democrats.
In a race that usually flies under the radar, Republican Allan Klepper lost his position as Town Moderator to Democrat Julia P. Califano, who picked up 57 percent of the vote.
In the General Assembly districts that include Barrington, Sen. David E. Bates, a Republican, beat out challenger Lawrence J. Signore with 51 percent of the vote.
In House District 66, the seat vacated by Republican Susan Story, Democrat Joy Hearn defeated Republican Margaret Kane, 2,915 to 2,398.
