RICHARD SALIT, a staff reporter who covers Newport out of The Journal's East Bay bureau, in Bristol, came to The Journal in 1994. His last series chronicled a heart transplant received by 11-year-old Sara Powell, of Middletown. Salit has won awards from the Rhode Island Press Association and the New England Associated Press News Executives Association. He completed a fellowship at the Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting in 2004.

FRIEDA SQUIRES, a photographer for The Journal since 1981, started her career in the U.S. Navy as a photographer's mate. In 1997, she went to sea aboard The Sullivans, the Navy's first ship to accommodate women, and in 1988, aboard the Roberts, for a story about the impact on families when a ship is deployed. The Roberts hit a mine in the Persian Gulf, but the crew saved the ship from sinking. She has won awards from the National Press Photographers Association.
