gay evolution
After decades of struggle, Providence has fostered a thriving gay enclave
in the only New England state not to sanction same-sex unions.

MARK ARSENAULT, general assignment reporter, joined The Providence Journal in 1998. He was part of the team that covered the 2003 fire at The Station nightclub for nearly a year. His 2004 profile of Craig Price, the Warwick teen who killed four neighbors in the 1980s, was based on some 40 prison interviews. Last summer, he wrote a five-week Sunday series on people at mid-life. The author of three mystery books, Arsenault writes an occasional Journal series on the craft of writing. Nobody outside the newspaper business has ever wanted to hire him. He has been a paperboy, a newspaper “section stuffer” and a truck driver for USA Today. He has been a reporter since 1989.
